Guide to Kids Ties
Why would you ever need a kids tie? Think about special events and occasions such as weddings, Church, formal family gatherings, or even school uniforms. Sooner or later an occasion will arise that would be a perfect time for father and son to dress in matching neckties. Should you be shopping for some boys’ neckties then below are some tips that you might find helpful.
Adult Length Ties
Most adult neckties have an untied length of 57 to 59 inches which will be the right fit for men ranging in height from 5 foot to 6 foot 3 inches. Thus, if your son is especially tall, then an adult length tie might be a good choice. If he is shorter than 5 feet then kids tie will be in order.
Self-Tied Kids Ties
Sooner or later any young man will need to learn how to tie a tie. So why not start at an early age? Showing your son to tie a necktie will be a perfect chance to bond. In addition, a self tied necktie looks much classier than a clip-on, and finally a self-tied necktie is much more versatile since the length can be adjusted. For all these reasons we carry most of our kids ties in a self-tied style. They are 47-48 inches in length and will fit boys between the ages 6 and 11 years of age.
Clip-On Ties for Kids
Clip on ties offer some advantages over self-tied neckties. First, they are much more convenient since no complicated knot is required. Second, some consider them safer since they are not worn around the neck – a benefit that is especially considered by schools ordering uniform neckties for their students. The downside of kids clip-on ties is that they are difficult to find in the right length. The length cannot be adjusted. Should you still be convinced that a clip-on tie is the best choice then please consider these tie length suggestions (incl. the knot): Kids 3-5 years: 12 inches; Kids 6-9 years: 14 inches, kids 9-11 yeas: 16 inches.
Other Useful Tips & Tricks
Because they are a specialty item, kids ties are not available in the color and design choice as adult length ties. Should you be looking to match a particular color (think weddings for example) then finding the perfect kids tie might be quite challenging. If you have a difficult time finding the right kids tie then there are a few tricks that might solve your problems. First, consider buying an adult length tie and have it altered by a local tailor for $15-$20. We have had many customers do this with great success. Another option is to tie the necktie much shorter. For more information on this we also suggest you read our guide on Shorter Neckties. Another popular trick is to buy a skinny tie. Skinny ties have almost the exact width as kids ties, and the only thing you need to do is to take a pair of scissors and cut the tie to the right length. This is typically a good suggestion should you only need the tie for a one-time event. Also, we suggest you don’t cut the tie before you tied it to the right length.
